In partial defence of Manning
THE EDITOR: While others may condemn Mr Manning, I would rather say that his visit to Radio 94.1 is useful if only to highlight the dire need for action on the question of rapidly deteriorating broadcast standards in Trinidad and Tobago.
For too long we have tolerated over the airwaves a level of discourse and behaviour way below what is expected of any country aspiring to first world status. In any other self-respecting country such comportment would be confined to “fringe radio”; in Trinidad and Tobago it is approved for mainstream media! I have only just read the transcript of the offending newscast and though Mr Manning's interest in its content may be considered partisan and mine is not, I remain amazed at the extent of public indifference to what can only be described as absolutely unprofessional conduct during a newscast.
Certainly MATT should have beaten us to that office! Sometime ago I was asked to address the media launch of a local radio station.
Knowing the proposed format of the station to be 24 hours of soca, I suggested then to the management that between the hours of 6 am and 9 am they so select their material as to allow children on their way to school and adults on their way to work to arrive at their respective destinations in a fit frame of mind to pursue their objectives.
To demonstrate sincerity I agreed to sponsor each morning the full version of Sparrow's “Education” (...children go to school and learn well...) Things went well for a year but it was not long before I found my effort squashed between a barrage of low class, vulgar and despicable diatribe. Reluctantly and with great disappointment we withdrew our sponsorship.
There is a time for due process and there is a time for appropriate action; such a time is now. Freedom of speech is not universal and its achievement should be valued and regarded as not just a right, but also a responsibility. I urge all involved to strive to uphold the high standards of your noble profession.
Ask yourselves, would our own TT-born Sir Trevor McDonald or any of our great broadcasters of the past have condoned this?
