PRESIDENT OF the Petroleum Dealers Association Derek
Poon Tip said he was very thankful that National
Petroleum (NP) workers went back on the job yesterday,
or motorists would have had to face definite fuel
shortages going well into the weekend.
Speaking
to the Daily Express, Poon Tip explained that the
leakage which took place at NP's Sea Lots LPG plant
on Wednesday, resulted in tankers not being able
to get in or leave the NP compound.
He
revealed that NP tried "to supplement"
service stations on the East/West corridor with
tankers from Pointe a Pierre, but service stations
in deep South and Chaguanas suffered as a result.
"This
morning (yesterday) had the same problem, but since
workers returned to work tankers will roll out this
afternoon. There will still be shortages at certain
service stations and may persist until Friday morning
(today)," Poon Tip said.
He
noted however that barring any other incidents,
fuel supplies across the country should return to
a state of normalcy by Saturday.
NP
in a statement issued yesterday, said: "On
June 21, 2006 at about 7:30 a.m. an incident occurred
at the NP Sea Lots LPG plant involving the emission
of a small amount of liquid petroleum gas (LPG)
from a line during servicing at the storage facility.
"Four
employees, who were in the area at the time, received
minor injuries for which they were immediately treated.
"NP
staff and contractors have addressed and rectified
these issues and have given the all clear for employees
to return to work."
It
closed by stating that the temporary shut-down of
operations which occurred on Wednesday resulted
in a delay of fuel delivery to our service station
network, but assured that they were working "to
return our delivery service to a state of normalcy,
to ensure minimal inconvenience to all our customers".
