Haiti will mark its return to the Caribbean trade
and development bloc CARICOM on Monday at a summit
of the organization's member states in St Kitts
and Nevis.
Haitian President Rene Preval, accompanied by two
cabinet ministers, is due to address representatives
at the three-day summit amid hopes of promoting
trade with regional partners.
The Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM)
had ejected Haiti from the organization in February
2004 the day after former president Jean Bertrand
Aristide resigned under threat of armed rebellion.
Following presidential elections in February and
legislative polls in April, CARICOM invited Haiti
to return to the bloc.
"This is a policy decision that permits Haiti
to retrieve its place in CARICOM which is comprised
of democratically elected governments," Fritz
Longchamp, a member of Preval's cabinet, told AFP.
