Prime
Minister Patrick Manning, centre, heads down a flight
of steps during a tour of bpTT’s Ibis Deep
exploration well off Trinidad’s south-east
coast.
Prime
Minister Patrick Manning expressed confidence that
bpTT would find hydrocarbons in the Ibis Deep field
located in the South East Coast Consortium (SECC).
The
SECC gained some notoriety in the early 1990s when
a wholly state-owned consortium undertook a US$120
million loan to develop the field’s reserves.
In
April 1991, one well was drilled into another leading
production to be shut in. Production, which had
then peaked at 100 million cubic feet of gas and
6,000 barrels of condensate, never recovered after
the incident.
Speaking
with reporters after touring the exploration rig,
Manning said because of bpTT’s expertise over
the years, its success ratio was higher than expected.
BpTT
is the operator of the Ibis Deep field on behalf
of a consortium consisting EOG Resources, Petrotrin
and the National Gas Company.
EOG
Resources, formerly known as Enron Oil and Gas,
acquired a 95 per cent working interest in the SECC
in November 1992.
The
well is expected to be the deepest ever drilled
in T&T’s history, going down to a depth
of more than 20,000 feet.
