Man
named in Tesoro scandal dies

Bernard Victor Primus, the lawyer-economist whose
name was called in the Trinidad Tesoro scandal in
the 1980s, was buried yesterday after a funeral
service at the Church of Assumption, Long Circular
Road, Port of Spain.
Primus,
82, was the president of the Trinidad and Tobago
Yacht Club and during his tenure, he was said to
have made an invaluable contribution to yachting.
Primus
shot into the news during the late 1950s, while
he practised as an industrial economist at the Industrial
Development Corporation and later as an honorary
member of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union.
During
his active practice at the bar, he was chairman
of several companies, including Trinidad Tesoro
Petroleum Company Limited and Orange Grove National
Company Limited.
No
one was ever charged in the Tesoro affair, which
is said to have involved millions of dollars.
Primus
received his early education at Lycee Schoelcher,
Fort-de France, and the London School of Economics.
