The
sixth meeting on Inter-Secretariat Co-operation
in the Greater Caribbean was held on July 13 at
the headquarters of the Latin American Economic
System (Sela) in Caracas, Venezuela.
In
his opening remarks to the meeting, comprising representatives
from Caricom, Economic Commission for Latin America
and the Caribbean (Eclac) and Latin American Economic
System, Sela’s permanent secretary, Ambassador
Roberto Guarnieri, stressed the need to strengthen
the regional co-operation and integration organisations,
and pledged to intensify his organisation’s
co-operation activities within the Greater Caribbean.
In
addressing the gathering, Ruben Silie, secretary
general of the Association of Caribbean States,
underlined that there was a single agenda for the
Greater Caribbean, that could be prioritised differently
for each organisation, but which called for the
same resources.
The
Inter-Secretariat meeting sought to examine ways
in which the secretariats of the Greater Caribbean
region could work together to achieve their common
goals. It also provided a space in which each participating
entity could air their opinions and concerns in
this respect.
During
the ensuing political dialogue, Caricom’s
assistant secretary general, foreign and community
relations, Ambassador Colin Granderson made reference
to the implementation of the CSME and placed great
importance on reinforcing links between the public
and private sector.
The
Eclac representative reiterated the United Nation’s
commitment to supporting the process of integration
and regional co-operation and informed of the activities
already being carried out by their Caribbean Development
Co-operation Committee (UNECLAC/ CDCC).
The
ACS Secretariat was given the lead role in advancing
the creation of Greater Caribbean information portal,
with support from the UNECLAC/CDCC Information Centre
in order to better co-ordinate this activity.
The
next meeting on Inter-Secretariat Co-operation will
take place within a year at the ACS Secretariat.
