Former UNC chairman Basdeo Panday and current political
leader Winston Dookeran will meet before the week
is out in an attempt to sort out leadership and
other issues that have been plaguing the party.
High on the agenda will be the current
disunity within the executive.
Dookeran told the Express on Monday
that he called Panday on Sunday to request a date
for them to meet.
However, Panday indicated to Dookeran
that he would not be available for Monday and they
agreed to confirm another date soon.
Panday has promised the rank and
file of the party that he would work to reunify
the executive, which has been embroiled in a public
argument in the past months.
Panday, in a brief telephone interview
yesterday, confirmed Dookeran called him on Sunday
as well as Monday to enquire on a date for a meeting.
Panday said he could not meet with
Dookeran on Monday because of another engagement,
but would be able to meet with him either today
or tomorrow.
One of Dookeran's public relations
officers, Nirad Tewarie, on Monday told the Express
that although Dookeran and Panday have had only
one meeting, both have had meetings with other people,
among them Suren Capildeo, to help resolve issues
in the interim.
