Barbados
has agreed to participate in the Eastern Caribbean
Gas Pipeline Project and purchase natural gas from
T&T for electricity generation.
An
official announcement is expected to be made in
Bridgetown in the coming weeks.
This
was confirmed by the Project Co-ordinator of the
Eastern Gas Pipeline Company, Greg Rich who told
the Guardian that Barbados would initially purchase
between 20 to 25 mmcf/d which he expected to double
to 50mmcf/d as the island increases its electricity
demand.
Rich
said: “Initially the amount of gas we will
be selling to Barbados is rather small but with
time we believe that would double.”
This
would mean that the electricity company in Barbados
would have to change its power generation from diesel
to the cleaner burning natural gas. (CW)
