The Norwegian government said Monday it was prepared
to cancel debts totalling 79 million dollars (62.3
million euros) owed by Egypt, Jamaica, Ecuador,
Peru and Sierra Leone.
A proposal to cancel the obligations is to be included
in the 2007 budget, which will be presented Friday
to parliament, where a leftist coalition has the
majority.
The debts were incurred between 1976 and 1980 as
part of a program by Norway to boost its sales abroad
of ships and maritime equipment.
The government stressed that a unilaterial and unconditional
cancellation will not affect its budget for development
aid.
