Workmen from Lennox Offshore Services Limited pump
water out of the Kelly's Mark yesterday as it continues
to slowly sink at Caridoc, Chaguaramas.
A
sinking cargo ship has raised concerns about a possible
oil spill at Chaguaramas.
The
vessel, Kelly's Mark, which has been at Caridoc
for more than a decade, started to sink over the
weekend.
On
Tuesday, dockyard workers noticed oil in the water
surrounding the vessel's submerged stern.
Workers
from Lennox Offshore Services Ltd were pumping water
out of the ship's hold yesterday while others were
attempting to contain the oil spill.
Officials
from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA)
and members of the Yacht Services Association had
visited earlier to survey the damage.
Communications
Officer for the EMA, Alicia Charles, said that investigations
into the matter were ongoing.
"We
still have to contact the owner of the vessel to
find out what occurred. And we're also awaiting
samples from the Institute of Marine Affairs. They
took samples yesterday so we're waiting on those
results," she said.
An
Lennox Petroleum Services Ltd representative said
that the company had sold its interest in the ship
to Caridoc and that the vessel was to be scrapped
and its pieces sent to India.
