Delta
Airlines will begin flying to T&T before the
end of the year. This was revealed by Tourism Minister
Howard Chin Lee who said the Government had continued
to increase airlift in both Trinidad and Tobago.
Chin
Lee said from December 9 Delta will fly four times
a week to Trinidad and a 737 aircraft will fly once
a week to Tobago.
The
Tourism Minister made the announcement while addressing
the Senate on Tuesday night as debate on the 2006/2007
Budget continued.
The
Tourism Minister said, in addition to Delta, talks
were ongoing in an effort to increase the number
of flights Virgin Atlantic and British Airways made
to Tobago.
Chin
Lee said arrivals to T&T had increased to 460,000
last year. With this in mind, additional rooms were
being built in Port-of-Spain and close to the Piarco
International Airport.
Chin
Lee said the Government had approved $2 billion
in investment in the tourism sector. The Emperor
Valley Zoo is also to be transformed into a more
user-friendly facility for both locals and tourists.
Chin
Lee said an international consultant, who has designed
zoos in several countries, had prepared a plan that
the Government would implement. He said it would
involve additional parking spaces, a walking trail,
an orchid garden and a tourist discovery centre.
Chin
Lee said the move was part of a general improvement
in tourist facilities.
He
also gave additional details of the planned upgrade
of the Maracas beach facilities.
Chin
Lee revealed the North Coast Road will be diverted
to behind the carpark, which would be raised to
curb its flooding and additional parking places
would be provided.
