Residents of Digity Trace, Penal, continued to assess
damages to their homes and livestock yesterday,
six days after an oil well blow-out near their homes.
Farmers
said scores of goats were falling ill, while chickens
were dying. "The animals are eating the grass
where the oil spilled and they are dying and getting
sick," Neil Persad said.
He
said oil remained on scores of rooftops and the
homeowners were afraid to stay in the houses. "People
don't know what will happen and how this oil would
affect them so they are sitting outside their houses.
We are waiting for Petrotrin to come and give us
an update as to what is taking place. The affected
residents need some kind of compensation for the
damages," he said.
Up
until last night, 27 households were still being
supplied with truck-borne water, bottled water for
drinking and three meals a day by the State-owned
oil company.
A
company official said a meeting will be held tomorrow
to update residents on the clean-up activities.
