Canadian energy giant Petro-Canada has been successful
in leasing two rigs to explore for oil and gas off
Central Trinidad and northwest Tobago.
Earlier
this year, the company said it had difficulties
securing drilling rigs because of a worldwide shortage
and, as a result, had to reschedule its drilling
operations from next month to the second half of
next year.
The
company is leasing the Rowan Gorilla from Rowan
Drilling to drill four wells in the Gulf of Paria,
and the Diamond Ocean Worker from Diamond Offshore
Drilling to drill four to five wells off Tobago.
The rigs will be here for six months from July 1,
2007.
Petro-Canada
communications specialist Rosemary Drummond told
the Express that "by this time next year, we
should be able to say whether we were successful
in our exploration".
Top
executives of the company met with THA Chief Secretary
Orville London on Tuesday to brief him on the development
and the company's schedule of operations off Tobago.
Drummond
and other executives of the company will hold one
of two public consultations in Tobago in the first
week of next month to discuss their operations.
The other will be held in Trinidad. Fishing industry
leaders, environmental groups, village councils,
assemblymen and parliamentarians are expected to
be invited to the consultation.
