Alcoa,
the company at the centre of a raging smelter controversy
in T&T, has been named as one of Brazil’s
most admired and ethical companies, a release from
the Alcoa T&T Project Team said yesterday.
According
to the release, Carta Capital, one of Brazil’s
leading weekly news magazines, in an annual survey,
placed Alcoa second in the country’s metallurgy
and steel making sector.
The
release said Carta Capital polled more than 1,000
presidents and directors of companies in 47 sectors
of the Brazilian economy.
“A
key indicator considered by the voters in this year’s
survey was ethics,” Alcoa T&T noted.
“Alcoa’s
performance improved since the 2005 ranking, when
it placed fourth in its sector.”
Alcoa
is the world’s leading producer and manager
of primary aluminium, fabricated aluminium and alumina
facilities.
The
company has 129,000 employees in 44 countries and
was named one of the top most sustainable corporations
in the world at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, the release said.
Alcoa
has been the subject of heavy criticism by T&T
citzens and environmentalists.
