The purpose of today’s national symposium
on the aluminium industry is only to reveal the
“facts” and not to change the collective
mind of the Government, according to Prime Minister
Patrick Manning.
Speaking
at the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association
(Doma) breakfast meeting at Crowne Plaza, Manning
said while the Government is not infallible and
will listen to various points of views, “it’s
not because somebody objects we will stop.”
Manning
said the symposium, which will be broadcast live
on the Caribbean New Media Group channels 9 &13,
cable channel 6 and radio station Talk City 91.9
FM, will allow the national community the opportunity
to see what the facts are.
Today’s
symposium, organised by the South Trinidad Chamber
of Industry and Commerce in collaboration with the
University of the West Indies and the University
of T&T will be held at Paria Suites Hotel, San
Fernando, beginning at 9.00 am.
It
has been criticised for being “one-sided”
and the latest to voice that opinion was Independent
Senator Mary King after she was refused a request
to present a paper at the symposium.
“It
will turn out to be people making presentations
on behalf of the Government and investors and there
does not seem to be much scope for people who would
have an alternative view,” King said yesterday.
