The
Power Generation Company of T&T (PowerGen) is
again delivering its contracted supply of electricity
to the T&T Electricity Commission (T&TEC)
following the shutdown of two generators at its
Port-of-Spain power station on Wrightson Road on
Tuesday. There are four generators at the power
station.
In
fact, PowerGen’s Director - Legal & Regulatory
Affairs Joy Ramlogan said the company yesterday
had the capacity to supply 859 megawatts of power
to T&TEC, well above what it is contracted to
supply.
Tuesday’s
shutdown caused a sharp drop in power, leading to
blackouts in several parts of the country as T&TEC
was forced to shed load.
According
to a T&TEC statement, the areas affected were
Port-of-Spain, Belmont, Cascade, Laventille, Morvant,
St James and Mucurapo and environs.
A
release from PowerGen said the company suffered
a fall in power at the Wrightson Road power station
on Tuesday when two generating units tripped off.
One - the Unit No 4 Steam Turbine - went off at
12.25 pm due to an electrical/instrumentation fault
and the second - Unit No 2 Steam Turbine - tripped
off a minute later because of a loss of vacuum on
the cooling water system. This meant the system
was not bringing in enough cooling water and the
turbine shut down as a safety measure.
Ramlogan
said the engineers were still investigating what
caused these problems.
The
No 2 steam turbine was back in operation by 2 pm
yesterday and No 4 was due to resume operations
last night after testing during the afternoon.
Even
without the No 4 steam turbine in service, Ramlogan
said PowerGen was generating in excess of the amount
of power it is contracted to deliver to T&TEC.
