Prime
Minister Patrick Manning yesterday refused to end
the suspense and give an election date. Speaking
after a tour of the Cumuto/Manzanilla constituency,
Manning said he was sorely tempted to name the election
date but decided against it.
Describing
the pending general election as “payback time”
for the 33-3 defeat inflicted on the PNM in 1986
by the NAR, he said the party needed to put a “special”
constitution in place before calling the election.
He said the party needed a special majority in Parliament.
Warning
PNM supporters to not be complacent, he said the
party would face the electorate in due course but
that the
responsibility
of the party
faithful
was to be ready and put their house in order.
Manning
boasted to supporters that the unemployment rate
was at a record five percent, that more families
were being fed and that more houses were being provided
by the Government.
He
also boasted that nationals were getting the opportunity
to attend the University of the West Indies for
free.
