The University
of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) student chapter of
the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) was officially
launched on January 31 at the UTT Point Lisas Campus.
Zameer Mohammed, senior manager,
business development, said it was the largest student
chapter in the Caribbean and Latin America.
He pointed out that the formation
of the student chapter was part of a wider initiative
by the university to enhance the total student experience.
Mohammed said that during 2007 students can expect
an increase in the number of professional services
inclusive of additional extracurricular activities
at all UTT campuses.
In fact, he said UTT has dedicated
2007 The Year of the Student.
SPE student chapter president Troy
Wilson explained that the chapter “is made
up of a group of students that are currently pursuing
diploma, bachelor and master degrees in the field
of petroleum engineering.”
Wilson said the UTT student chapter
was fully aware of the demands and expectations
of the oil and gas industry. He indicated that his
membership would strive to achieve “a sound
grasp of the technical and non-technical aspects
of the industry, gain mastery of professional communication
and networking, and develop strong team work, leadership
abilities and a good work ethic.”
Jamaludin
Khan, manager of Enhanced Oil Recovery and Reserve
at Petrotrin, in delivering the feature address
at the launch, stressed the importance of leadership
in today's corporate environment and urged students
to develop this capability now.
