A SUPER-State energy company could soon be on the
horizon for Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister
Patrick Manning said yesterday.
Speaking
before a large audience of global oil and gas executives
who attended the BG Trinidad and Tobago Energy Luncheon
Series at the Hilton Trinidad, Port of Spain, Manning
said that the time had come when Trinidad and Tobago
had to consider integrating its oil industry with
the establishment of an integrated oil company that
goes international.
"It
will mean if we agree on such a direction, one company
arising out of Petrotrin, National Gas Company,
National Energy Corporation and National Petroleum,"
Manning said.
He
admitted that the formation of such a company did
not come "without its dangers," pointing
to the sheer size of such a "State enterprise
undertaking" and damage which could be done
to the country's image, as a result of "irresponsible
trade union activity".
Manning
said that Cabinet had "endorsed the view."
