State-owned
National Gas Company and the National Energy
Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding
with Isegen South Africa (Pty) Ltd to build a
US$64 million maleic anhydride processing plant in Trinidad and Tobago.
Maleic anhydride and its derivatives-malic, tartaric
and fruitaric acids-are used as preservatives in
the food industry, as leavening agents in baking
and to impart effervescence in pharmaceutical tablets
and powders. The acidulants are also used in wine-making.
The facility is expected to be operational by
the second quarter of 2010 and use 700 barrels
per day of the n-butane stream from another State-owned
company, the Phoenix Park Gas Processors plant,
to produce 20,000 tonnes of maleic anhydride per
year, reports indicated yesterday.
