IAN has handed over leadership of one of this
country's most powerful private sector organisations,
the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and
Commerce,
to another Ian.
Ian Welch, who served as president of the group
for one year, yesterday welcomed new president,
Ian Collier, at the group's annual general meeting
at the Hilton Trinidad, Port of Spain.
Welch
said: "I've come to believe in this
system of changing presidents each year. It isn't
easy to maintain one's energy, passion and idealism
in an intense environment when you are not full
time.
"This
system ensures that our membership, and indeed
our country, always has continuous freshness
from this Chamber - something for other people
to think about."
Welch
noted that recent public statements over the
LNG memorandum of understanding between Jamaica
and Trinidad and Tobago "has concerned us",
adding, however, that debate is necessary as we
grow towards becoming a more integrated region.
Collier meanwhile insisted that inflation was
still unacceptably high at 8.4 per cent, adding
that Trinidad and Tobago would not realise its
fullest potential without substantial and sustained
direct foreign investment, state-of-the-art ports
and infrastructure and a crime-free environment,
among other tenets.
