In 2006, Schlumberger, an oil services company
that has been operating in Trinidad for 74 years,
spent more than US$1.5 million a day on research
and development of innovative technology that adds
value to customers, said Wade Welkener, general
manager, Caribbean.
And at the Crowne Plaza hotel last Tuesday, representatives
of the company invited operators in the local industry
to find out more about their latest technologies
and hear the success stories of applying their
latest discoveries.
“The ultimate measure of success is directly
related to the value created for you as the user,” said
Welkener.
Making a presentation on Breakthrough Team Performance
(BTP) was Uwen Ukong who operates in Latin America.
He likened BTP to the performance of the Soca Warriors
in getting to the World Cup in Germany.
BTP, he said, required technology innovation,
solution deployment and industry collaboration
or innovation through openness and partnership
so as to bring greater value to customers. However,
he admitted that human reserve constraint was a
big challenge.
Schlumberger is also assisting UWI and UTT and
is involved with a Driving Safety Awareness campaign
in which it sends its Seat Belt Convincer (a machine
that simulates the shocking effects of a car crash
at 10 kph) for demonstrations at local businesses
and schools.
The company is also installing a computer lab
for the Point Fortin Junior Secondary school which
should be in operation by the end of May.
