GENERAL Electric Oil and Gas company has opened
a US$400 million service centre at the Atlantic
LNG plant at Point Fortin.
The new service centre, which was opened by acting
Energy Minister Christine Sahadeo, will provide
specialised repairs to Atlantic LNG turbines on
a 17-year contractual agreement between both parties.
The
centre employs 30 people and is equipped with
facilities for training Trinidadians in what was
described as a "modular system of repairs" by
General Electric Company vice chairman John G Rice.
Rice
said at the opening on Wednesday that the new
servicing arrangements had come about because
of "a good and stable relationship between
GE and Atlantic LNG".
Rice said GE already had significant investments
in Trinidad and the investment in the new centre
would create a stronger presence in Trinidad.
Sahadeo
congratulated Atlantic LNG for bringing greater
added value opportunities in the energy
sector, and in particular, "the new approach
to repairs which will reduce downtime and promote
efficiency and productivity in the industry".
Sahadeo
said Trinidad and Tobago enjoyed more than US$8
billion in foreign investment, and saw
the linkages between the two companies as "world
class".
