BARBADIANS should have been given a chance to
buy into the island's biggest conglomerate,
Barbados Shipping & Trading (BS&T), before
its announced merger plan with Neal & Massy
of Trinidad and Tobago.
Opposition Leader David Thompson made this complaint
Saturday during a Press briefing after his Democratic
Labour Party's morning canvassing in Christ Church
East Central.
"My own view is that one better option would
have been to further expand the ownership base
of Barbados Shipping & Trading by Barbadians
and to ensure that there is a wider opportunity
for participation by Barbadians inthe ownership
of an important company. So from that point ofview
I am disappointed."
It
was also "a pity" that, considering
the role Government could play in facilitating
business, "more is not being done to broaden
the owner opportunities of Barbadians – economic
enfranchisement", Thompson added.
He said the emphasis should be on providing more
investment opportunities at a better rateof return
for the citizens of this country.
Thompson saw the planned merger as an indication
of some of the major business changes that were
going to happen throughout the Caribbean.
He noted the view held by some Barbadians that
Trinidad and Tobago's business presence here was
too dominant.
He did not criticise this, but said what was important
atthe end of the day was who controlled the business,
not just who owned it. (TY)
