The Point Fortin Chamber of Industry and Commerce has renewed its call for
the immediate construction of a new hospital at Point Fortin to be equipped
with a burns and trauma unit.
Chamber
president Francis Bertrand, in a statement earlier
this week, said, "There are several
people who are dying in the oil belt and those
in authority seem not to understand our basic need
for a proper health facility in this area."
Bertrand's
comments came in the wake of the death of Ricardo
Felix, 39, of Siparia, and serious injuries
to two other workers, Richard Phillip and Kirk
Peters, on an offshore oil platform off Point Fortin.
Bertrand said the community had "grown tired
of all the hospital rhetoric from those in authority".
Last week, Health Minister John Rahael had announced
that the new hospital in Point Fortin would begin
in a few months time.
