Petrotrin has ordered a special investigation into the cause of Monday's explosion
on an offshore platform in which a worker was killed and two others seriously
injured.
The company's communications manager
Arnold Corneal said yesterday: "The enquiry
will address the concerns raised by the union
regarding the
accident and whatever the findings of the investigation
we will take all the necessary steps to avoid a
repeat of similar accidents."
He added: "It is important
that we work with the union since the nature
of our business carries
the elements of risks."
Corneal said the members of the company's Employee
Assistance Programme were providing counselling
to the families of the three men, who were employed
with the contract firm Trinjet Services Ltd.
Ricardo Felix, 39, of Siparia, died as a result
of injuries he received in the incident.
Richard Phillips, 23, of Vance River, La Brea
and Kirl Peters of Point Fortin were being treated
at the Southern Medical Centre, San Fernando up
to yesterday.
They were both said to be in stable condition
but were not being allowed visitors, the Express
was told.
Felix's fiance Ann Bernard yesterday displayed
a picture of them together-they had planned to
get married in December after postponing the wedding
some months ago to make it a bigger occasion.
The gas explosion occurred on Trinmar's Platform
21 in the offshore Soldado Field, when a 12-inch
line ruptured while refurbishment work was taking
place.
Petrotrin, the parent company of Trinmar, has
appointed a special team to find out whether it
was an accident or a process failure.
Kelvin Ramnath, Petrotrin's Health
Safety and Environment manager, said: "The
team appointed by the company will look at the
entire system and
make recommendations where necessary."
