Early this year, SDT Maintenance Management Group
Ltd. (SDT) was contracted by PPGPL to optimise
the preventive maintenance plan for a critical
part of their Plant at Point Lisas. SDT is a joint
venture between Stork from The Netherlands, Damus
from Trinidad and Tecnoconsult from Venezuela.
SDT was selected for this improvement project because
of the company's experience with Reliability Centred
Maintenance (RCM) and Maintenance Management Systems.
Consultants of SDT have worked and trained for
several months in The Netherlands in maintenance
management methodologies on projects at Stork Maintenance
Management, one of the parent companies of SDT.
Under supervision of SDT's Senior Maintenance
Consultant Etienne van Dongen and Maintenance Consultant
Clint Harry, the PPGPL technical staff was first
introduced to an intensive course in preventive
maintenance planning and optimisation. The course
involved techniques developed by Stork Maintenance
Management that have been used successfully for
years, especially in the Netherlands and Belgium.
After completing the course, the method was applied
on one crucial system in the gas processing system,
the Soldado Compressor Station. At closeout a week
ago, SDT's Maintenance Consultants presented the
maintenance activities which will now be registered
in the Maintenance Management System of the gas
processor.
For the past 15 years Phoenix Park Gas Processors
Limited has been providing an essential natural
gas conditioning service for the National Gas Company
thereby ensuring that downstream users in the petrochemical
sector receive a high quality feedstock and fuel.
PPGPL therefore cannot afford to have a large disruption
in the gas supply to the island's industries. Aside
from the inconveniencies for the local population,
the gas supply is also vital to Trinidad's economically
important Energy Sector.
Through their preventive maintenance utilising
plans that were optimised and some developed by
SDT, PPGPL intends to decrease the number of unexpected
interruptions to plant operating time even further
than before. This will minimise the chance of experiencing
a gas disruption due to technical failure. In addition,
it allows for timely planning of the maintenance
activities and safe, efficient maintenance execution.
In this way, maintenance expenses go down while
work is conducted safely.
Even
though the benefits of the engagement conducted
by SDT would only be realised in the future, PPGPL
is already optimistic about the work conducted
by SDT. "The bundling of knowledge and experience
of our co-workers of all divisions (electrical,
instrumentation, mechanical, inspection and production)
together with the contribution and practical approach
of SDT, has delivered a good maintenance plan",
according to Wayne Chan Chow, Maintenance Manager. "We
are convinced that this plan will add a positive
contribution to the reliability of the gas processing,
the control of our expenses and the improvement
of safety. In the end this is good for our co-workers
and customers!"
SDT has already executed several RCM Analyses
for petrochemical companies in Trinidad and is
currently paving the way in computerised maintenance
management system (CMMS) implementations. SDT is
proud to be the first local company to implement
such a structure by combining the integration of
CMMS with a sound engineering background and best
practices.
