GOVERNMENT IS steadily moving upstream to establish
a new ship-building industry. This, in order to
cash in on the vast return from the booming ship-building
business, which annually generates billions of
dollars worldwide.
The facility will see the building of large ships,
pleasure craft and pirogues among other sea-faring
vessels. Minister in the Ministry of Finance Christine
Sahadeo yesterday made the announcement at the
closing session of the first annual Caribbean Port
Conference at the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School
of Business, Mt Hope.
“Right now CL Marine also has a dry-dock
facility which repairs pretty large vessels, I
understand Panamax - sized vessels… which
accommodate 50,000 tonnes.”
Sahadeo
explained that the move is in line with Government’s
plan to develop the non-oil sector including
the seven industries highlighted
for intensified investment including Food and Beverages,
Seafood, Film, Music and Entertainment, Printing
and Packaging, Information and Communication Technology.
An
industry source said “interested local
investors” have been researching some of
the leading ship building economies of the world
and have gone so far as to establish contact with
some of the world’s largest shipping magnates,
in a bid to lay a stake in the coming business.
Sahadeo noted that both ports, Pt Lisas and Port-of-Spain
have introduced technology with regard to terminal
management, which will in the long run aid the
process.
