Venezuela has been ranked 135th among 141 countries
in the 2007 Index of Economic Freedom, dropping
nine positions compared to 2006, when the country
occupied the 126th position.
The survey measures economic freedom in 2005 and
uses 42 different parameters to create an index
ranking countries based on public policies encouraging
economic freedom.
The major setback was in legal structure and reduced
respect for the right to private property. Further,
regulations on credits and labour increased, while
business freedom decreased.
Hong Kong was ranked first as to economic freedoms,
followed by Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland,
Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States,
Estonia, Australia, and Ireland.
Countries such as Niger, Togo, Chad, Burundi,
Venezuela, the Central African Republic, Congo,
Angola, Myanmar and Zimbabwe were ranked last.
