First vice president of the Oilfields Workers
Trade Union Ancil Roget has called on Petrotrin
to conduct an investigation into all lease and
farmout operations.
The
call has been made following Tuesday’s
explosion of an oil storage tank which left two
employees of Trincan Oil Ltd—Aaron Jairam
and Ronald Seechan—badly burnt.
Interviewed
yesterday, Roget said: “We are
experiencing problems with lease operators in Petrotrin’s
farmout and lease out. These companies are allowed
to operate as a law onto themselves.”
He
said: “Little regulations have been placed
on safety and there is no proper monitoring of
the oil being produced. In the past we had called
on Petrotrin to monitor the lease operators.”
Roget said the only way Petrotrin could combat
such accidents would be to give the Health, Safety
and Environment Department more autonomy.
Petrotrin’s communications manager Arnold
Corneal said yesterday an investigation into Tuesday’s
blast was ongoing.
