REPSOL YPF last night stated that it was confident that there was no oil spill
emanating from any of its offshore facilities.
The company made the comment in response to reports
yesterday from the Trinidad and Tobago Unified
Fisher-folk (TTUF), that what appears to be an
oil spill off the coast of Point Galeota had been
sighted on Monday.
The TTUF claimed the spill seemed to be emanating
from an offshore rig operated by Repsol.
However,
in a release last night, Repsol, after conducting
its own investigation, "assures
the public that there is no spill from any of our
offshore facilities".
Adding
that the company was "committed to
the protection of the environment", Repsol
said, "We have reconfirmed our operational
controls and are confident that none of our offshore
facilities have been compromised."
The TTUF wrote to Prime Minister Patrick Manning,
Environment Minister Pennelope Beckles and the
Environmental Management Authority (EMA) yesterday
about the incident. It also provided photos off
the oil spill, which were taken on Monday. (See
Page 10)
and the EMA about the incident. The letter was
forwarded to the media.
