FOLLOWING the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU)
protest action on October 9, resulting in the shutting
down of several Petrotrin plants which in turn
caused panic buying, a meeting was held between
Petrotrin officials and the OWTU at the Pointe-a-Pierre
branch of Petrotrin earlier this week.
Ancil
Roget, vice president of the OWTU, said the meeting
was not as positive as expected and
there are still many issues to be dealt with. One
issue of main concern to the union is Health, Safety
and Environment (HSE). The union expressed the
view that the management’s arrogance and
dictatorial manner, in the issues to be solved,
was politically directed.
Roget
continued: “The workers are overly
anxious and their patience has run out.” The
union is organising a 24-hour vigil in front Whitehall
on October 23, from 6 pm. He added, “All
workers under the union are being asked to join
in the vigil, including the cane farmers and Caroni
workers, who are being treated unfairly. If operations
are affected, it is all part of the necessary activity
to bring about resolution.”
Another meeting has been scheduled for October
23. Arnold Corneal, manager of corporate communications
at Petrotrin, said he was not at liberty to disclose
any information on the meeting.
Workers protested retrenchment, poor health and
safety conditions and a lack of medical and pension
benefits.
