The latest survey conducted by the North American
Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) shows
that political party Congress of the People is
playing a "spoiler
role" in the upcoming general election, pulling votes from the UNC Alliance
and hurting the party's chances in the marginal seats.
Nacta voters were placing the People's National
Movement ahead of the United National Congress
Alliance and the COP in the nine marginal seats,
with the PNM holding the most support with four
seats, the UNC Alliance capturing two so far and
three being too close to be decided.
Nacta stated: "If the COP
were not in the race, the PNM and UNC Alliance
would have been
in a dead heat in several of the marginals and
the UNC-A would even have a chance to wrestle two
traditional seats from the PNM in the East West
corridor."
They also said had the two opposing parties combined
their support would have outweighed that of the
PNM.
The findings also showed that many voters migrated
from the PNM towards the opposition giving the
UNC Alliance a chance of claiming victory.
COP has pulled some of the opposition's traditional
support and now the outcome of the elections will
depend on the undecided voters within the population.
NACTA stated undecided voters account for at least
six per cent of the voting population. -AW
