PowerGen's new US$100 million power plant at
Point Lisas has come at the right time to service
the growing number of industries that are emerging
in the country,
Prime Minister Patrick Manning said yesterday.
"PowerGen has the responsibility to meet
the demands of the industries by supplying the
necessary power that is needed at this time," he
said at the plant's commissioning.
He
said that in addition to the industrial and commercial
needs "the demand for domestic
energy has been growing and very shortly Trinidad
and Tobago will be the user of the highest amount
of electricity per capita in the western hemisphere".
Manning said since the development of a housing
programme throughout the country the need for power
increased significantly.
"This has resulted in the need for the construction
of a new power plant at Port of Spain which is
expected to be recommissioned in 2009," he
said.
Manning
said he anticipated that a number of new projects
were expected to come on stream next year
including "investments in plastics, iron,
steel and aluminium".
Addressing the gathering on the ministry's proposal
for expansion of the nation's power and electricity,
Minister of Utilities Pennelope Beckles said Cabinet
agreed to establish a $1.1 billion bulk power programme
to meet the increasing demands for power up to
2012.
She said the programme will include the construction
of a 65-megawatt dual fuel generating plant at
Cove Estate, Tobago, which is expected to be completed
in 2009.
