T&T’s High Commissioner to Nigeria has
advised the Nigerian Government to stimulate private
sector investment in the development of the country’s
natural gas sector.
She tendered the advice during a courtesy call
on the Minister of State for Energy (Gas), Chief
Odusina Emmanuel Olatunde over the weekend. During
the call
Mrs
Victoria Mendez Charles pledged T&T’s
total co-operation with Nigeria in it's efforts
to develop its gas sector.
She
told the Nigerian Gas Minister that T&T
is one of the largest exporters of gas to Spain
and Europe. She added that Nigeria could also benefit
tremendously from gas development if the country
made deliberate efforts to monetize the country’s
abundant natural resource.
Charles
observed that Nigeria and T&T share
similar characteristics in the oil and gas sector.
She
told the Nigerian minister that T&T’s
oil exploration began more than 100 years ago while
gas utilization is about 40 years old. She explained
that the exploration, utilization and monetisation
of gas have greatly enhanced the economic development
of T&T.
She promised that this country will co-operate
and provide technical assistance in gas development
to Nigeria in the spirit of South-South technological
development.
Chief Olatunde thanked the Mendez Charles for
her visit and expressed gratitude for her presentation
on gas development.
He
said that as the first Gas Minister of Nigeria
he was prepared to lay a solid foundation for the
maximum utilization and monetization of gas. He
said that Nigeria has a huge reserve of gas which
could turn around the country’s economy.
He also said that the government was prepared to
use gas to address the country’s power supply
problem.
