Dr. Thackwray Driver, CEO, South Trinidad Chamber
of Industry and Commerce (STCIC) said the Chamber
must vigorously encourage the export of energy
services from TT to regional and international
export markets.
The energy services sector, he said, is one of
the most competitive sectors of the local economy
and the high-skill levels and wide experience of
member companies in this sector means that it is
one of the sectors with the greatest potential
to exploit export markets.
“Developing the export of energy services
will allow TT to continue to use our expertise
in energy, even after domestic oil and gas reserves
are finally depleted,” he said during a press
briefing session at its executive office in San
Fernando during which plans for the Energy Services
Trade Missions to Guyana on and Suriname were discussed.
Approximately 17 Trinidad and Tobago energy service
companies took part in the mission in Guyana, October
21 to 24, and in Suriname which takes from October
31 to November 3.
This
trade mission forms part of the STCIC’s
thrust to promote the export of energy service
from Trinidad and Tobago, Driver said.
The Chamber said it aims to explore the many business
opportunities that exist in the energy, mining
and related sectors in these countries, especially
since the recent settlement of the maritime boundary
dispute last month.
This settlement has given an important boost to
the development of the hydrocarbon sector in both
countries. Given the free movement of skilled people,
goods and capital and the rights of establishment
provisions under the Caricom Single Market and
Economy (CSME), TT energy service companies are
uniquely positioned to take advantage of business
opportunities created by the anticipated surge
in exploration, and hopefully oil production, in
both countries, Driver said.
The
STCIC, with the Trade Ministry’s funding
has partnered in this initiative, sponsoring networking
events in both target markets.
