Newly-appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Paula
Gopee-Scoon says she fully supports industrialisation
in the Point Fortin area.
Gopee-Scoon
made the disclosure on Thursday at President’s House in St Ann’s
after the swearing-in ceremony of government
ministers,
senators and parliamentary secretaries.
She
won the Point Fortin seat in last Monday’s
general election, the constituency which she said
welcomed any form of industrialisation.
Her statements came in light of several pressure
groups and activists publicly demonstrating against
any further industrial development in areas in
the southland for mainly environmental and health
reasons.
“We welcome it. South has been forgotten
a bit and we welcome industrialisation,” Gopee-Scoon
said.
She
made reference to companies such as Atlantic
LNG as well as Trinmar being located in the South
for years and said that her constituents and others
in surrounding areas had become “used to
industrialisation” over time.
“We have so much to look forward to and
I believe there is much more industrialisation
to come for Point Fortin. We need it,” the
Foreign Affairs Minister said.
