Former energy minister Finbar Gangar yesterday withdrew two libel lawsuits
against State-owned Petrotrin and a forensic auditing company after reaching
out of court settlements.
Both
cases were called before Justice Zainool Hosein
at the Port of Spain High Court when attorneys
representing the three parties confirmed that
they had reached settlements.
Gangar
was represented by attorney Robin Otway and attorney
Priya Chankerdial represented Petrotrin. Attorney
Nadia Kangaloo represented Integrated Security
Systems Ltd, a London-based forensic auditing
company.
Gangar,
who had served as energy minister under the United
National Congress administration, had sued the
two companies for libel in 2001 following the
publication of three Petrotrin reports in December
2000, April 2001 and July 2001.
Petrotrin
had commissioned the auditing company to conduct
an investigation into deals surrounding two oilfields
and the reports related to the investigation.
Gangar
had obtained a default judgment in October 2002
against the auditing company's investigations
manager and director- who had contributed to
the reports- but that judgment was subsequently
set aside.
The
terms of the settlements announced yesterday
were not disclosed.
