There were work stoppages yesterday at Trinidad
Cement Ltd-over wages; and at Trinmar's Point Fortin
site over a newly installed security post.
At TCL's Claxton Bay plant, workers staged a morning
protest, crippling several operations at the facility.
The workers, who were displeased about wages and
working conditions, were worried that negotiations
were completed without addressing their problems.
John Boisselle, Oilfields Workers' Trade Union
representative for the workers, admitted that the
workers had heard little about the ongoing negotiations,
but assured them that the union would take up all
the issues they raised at the negotiating table.
"A cost agreement in principle was put forward
following negotiations, but the workers have other
issues. Today we met workers to hear these issues," said
Boiselle, who noted that the union and TCL officials
meet again tomorrow.
Alan Nobie, TCL's corporate communications manager,
said the protest slowed cement deliveries, but
operations returned to normal after workers agreed
to return to work in the afternoon.
At State-owned energy company Petrotrin's Trinmar
subsidiary, workers protested problems caused by
a newly installed security post at the facility.
They complained that the post, which was installed
over the weekend, caused several traffic and parking
problems at the site.
Workers staged a protest outside the company's
main office in morning, stalling work at the facility
until midday.
