Dansam Dhansook, the man who said he bribed former
government ministers Franklin Khan and Eric Williams,
has not been available for comment since Williams
was acquitted this week by a Port of Spain magistrate
on seven charges of misconduct in public office.
Williams, former minister of energy, was cleared
of all charges on Monday, Old Year's Day.
Since then, Dhansook, the lone People's National
Movement councillor at the Rio Claro/Mayaro Regional
Corporation, has not been answering calls to his
mobile phone or land lines.
The Express visited his home at Clear Water Road,
Rio Claro, yesterday, but the doors were locked.
No one answered the door bell. A passerby said
no one had been in the house for days.
Dhansook reported he had paid both ministers to
secure contracts for his seismic company.
Ramlochan Panchoo, chairman of the Rio Claro/Mayaro
Regional Corporation, said yesterday that councillors
were not required to go to the corporation offices
until there was a meeting.
"I cannot say when he came into the corporation
because we have not had meetings in a while so
he was not required to come in," he said.
Magistrate
Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan, in dismissing the
charges against Williams, said the evidence
given by Dhansook during the trial was "so
tenuous" that a jury, properly directed, could
not convict.
She agreed with the defence's submissions that
the prosecution had not made a prima facie case
against Williams.
