A
new $447 million industrial port is to be built
at Galeota by the State-owned National Energy Corporation.
It will be located on the south east coast, close
to the existing BP terminal and is expected to
be completed in 2010.
NEC president Prakash Saith told the Express that
the main users of the port will be BG Trinidad
and Tobago Limited, bpTrinidad and Tobago, BHP
Billiton, EOG Resources and other exploration and
producing companies operating in the area.
Saith said the new port will comprise six berths
to serve the needs of exploration and production
companies.
"It will also include a new fishing/commercial
complex which will assist fishermen in the area
in mooring their boats and making quick delivery
of their catch," he said.
Fishermen in the area have hailed the new port
development as a positive step in helping those
involved in the fishing trade
Fenton Straker, chairman of the
South East Fishing Association, said:" The
new port will be a plus for us. For years we
have been looking for
a place to construct a port, and if the new facility
will take care of our needs then all our problems
will be solved."
He said he hoped the port will be able to accommodate
the majority of the 160 boats that operate in the
area. Saith said construction of the port will
begin during the first quarter of this year.
