Petro-Canada yesterday announced that its recent natural gas discovery in
Block 22 offshore T&T could contain between 0.6 - 1.3 trillion cubic
feet of recoverable natural gas.
In a statement, the company identified
the local gas discovery as among the “more significant” of
its international exploration successes.
The company said it would have
to do further “appraisal
activity” before finalising estimates of the find.
The statement said, “This
is an exciting result for us, because it is the
first well in
a four-well programme on Block 22. the discovery
validates our exploration model and further success
on the block could lead to a material development.”
Petro-Canada said it completed
testing on the Cassra-1 well in deepwater Block
22 on January
9, 2008. The well was drilled in 430 metres of
water to a depth of 1,712 metres below sea level
at the north-west edge of “a seismically
defined amplitude anomaly.”
The company said the well flowed natural gas at
a rate of 23 million cubic feet per day, indicating
that it could contain between 0.6 - 1.3 trillion
cubic feet of gas.
The company said this is the first well to be
drilled in Block 22 in its 6-month drilling campaign.
It said that after completing the Cassra-1 well,
its equipment will be moved 4.6 kilometres to the
south to begin drilling the Cassra-2 well which
will appraise the Casra-1 discovery as part of
its objectives.
Petro-Canada was awarded a production
sharing contract for Block 22 in July 2005 and
is operating
the wellin partnership with the Petroleum Company
of T&T (Petrotrin). Petrotrin has a 10 per
cent partnership while Petro-Canada owns the remaining
90 per cent.
After Casra-2 is finished, Petro-Canada plans
to drill two or three other prospects in Block
22 this year as part of a 5-well drilling campaign.
