A
number of Indian nationals working in the energy
sector are expected in Trinidad, following the
award of an offshore contract to carry out oil
exploration in
north Trinidad.
The Express has learned that a licence to explore
for oil and gas off Trinidad's north coast has
been awarded to a company from India.
It is the first time that an energy company from
India will be involved in oil and gas exploration
in the region.
Oil and Natural Gas Company (ONGC) Mittal Energy
Limited of New Delhi, India, was recently awarded
block NCMA 2, which is located offshore, north
of Trinidad and west of Tobago, the Express understands.
The block is about 1,000 square metres.
"Officials of the company are expected in
Trinidad next week to sign the contract with officials
of the Ministry of Energy," an Energy Ministry
official who did not want to be named said yesterday.
ONGC-Mittal Energy Limited already operates a
steel mill at Point Lisas and is one of several
companies owned by the Mittal Group of companies.
The exploration block awarded to ONGC was one of
several that went out to tender.
The company was recently awarded a global award
for executive corporate governance.
ONGC is already exploring for oil in Nigeria,
Myanmar and Central Asia.
