Three UTT students were awarded the top prizes
among all entries in the recently held Trinidad
and Tobago Petroleum Conference (TTPC) Essay/Power
Point Competition.
Edward Bahaw,Troy Wilson and Zephrine Millard
submitted essays which focused on steps that could
be taken to ensure the future for the energy sector
beyond the oil and gas industry.
Given the economic benefits provided by the sector,
research of this nature is necessary to ensure
economic stability after the anticipated depletion
of the country's hydrocarbon reserves.
Not only did the essays highlight ways in which
the life of the industry could be extended, but
they also suggested industries that could be considered
as alternatives to mining oil and gas locally.
One proposal was to ensure that nationals of Trinidad
and Tobago are involved in the local energy sector
so that they can build related skills and capabilities.
This would allow for the establishment of national
firms that can export these skills and gain profits
from contracts in global energy industries.
Zameer Mohammed, senior manager
at UTT indicated that not only have the students
been able to top
national awards, as an institution "we continue
to attract international recognition".
In January 2008, UTT has been nominated
in the top three institutions in the world by
Getenergy
2008 for the "University-Industry" award.
The nomination is jointly with Atlantic LNG.
Wilson, an engineering student at UTT and president
of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter,
indicated that several initiatives are already
being implemented by local companies to expand
the country's infrastructure and capacity for refining
crude oil.
Raw materials can then be imported and refined
even after the local supply has been depleted.
This shift from exploration/extraction to processing
would in turn reduce the business risks associated
with the industry.
