Bathers continued to steer clear of Granville Beach, near Cedros yesterday
as oil-stained sand and debris remained untouched on the seashore.
But residents said if the authorities refused
to send in a crew to begin clean-up operations
they would take on the responsibility.
"We don't like to see our beach in this state.
People like coming to Granville because of the
nice, clean water and when they hear about this
oil spill they will not come here again. We want
someone to take responsibility and clean the shore,
but if they don't want to come we will have to
do it ourselves," resident Shane Seemungal
said.
On Sunday bathers began fleeing the beach after
oil began surfacing on the water. The black crude
washed ashore and stained the sand. Residents said
hours after the incident was reported officials
from state-owned energy company Petrotrin's Trinmar
operations visited the area. But had not returned
to clean up the spill.
"A business man in the area brought in a
backhoe and scraped up the oil but the beach is
still littered with debris and we need to get it
out so that people can come back and enjoy the
beach," Seemungal said.
He said if company official did
not show up yesterday they would begin a clean-up
campaign. "We
want to ensure that the beach is back to normal
for the weekend and we have Easter coming up so
we need to get it cleaned," he said.
A Petrotrin official said a team was scheduled
to go to Granville yesterday to assess the situation
and make arrangements for clean up operations.
He said neither property nor people was affected
by the spill.
