Firefighters
spent hours cooling gas pipelines at Petrotrin’s
tank farm last night, after a fire spread close
to the Point Fortin storage
facility, threatening two houses.
The fire sparked panic among villagers as it spread
through a drain leading to the operations at the
corner of Adventure Road and Richardson Street.
Police said a flammable liquid entered the drain
and had ignited shortly after 4 pm. Within minutes,
the fire spread to the back of a funeral home.
It threatened Tornadoes pan yard and two houses.
Last
night, Petrotrin’s corporate communications
manager Arnold Corneal said the officers worked
tirelessly to avert disaster. He said foam had
to be used to cool existing crude oil and water
lines close to the tank farm, which stores crude
oil.
Corneal said he did not know what caused the fire.
“We
are doing investigations at this stage, so not
much could be said regarding the cause of
the fire.”
He could not divulge the nature of the flammable
liquid which ignited.
“All
we can say is that no one was hurt, and there
was minimal damage to vegetation and
to property.”
Point Fortin residents said yesterday the fire
had created panic in the area. The area faces a
severe water problem and residents have been calling
for improved hospital facilities, in light of the
industrial activity in the borough.
