Laboratory workers at the state-owned energy company Petrotrin have downed tools because of a gas leak.
And they have refused to enter the building until the leak was detected and repaired.
Oilfields Workers Trade Union branch secretary at Petrotrin Shaffick Hyatali said yesterday that 88 workers walked off the job last Friday.
"And when they returned today, the fumes were still there so they left and have refused to return until something is done," he said.
Hyatali said workers have been advised to steer clear of the laboratory until the leak was repaired.
"The medical expert said it is not safe for them to go in there, so they are staying away," he said.
Hyatali said company officials have promised to wash out the lines and equipment.
"We suspect that the fumes are coming from a tank but the company should know what they are supposed to do about it," he said.
A company official said the matter was being addressed and should be resolved soon.
