"I am very encouraged after the mission to Cuba. Though my primary focus was not energy as was the case with my colleagues, I was able to have the meetings that I needed. My contacts were definitely at the level that gave me the kind of initial access that I needed and I think the South Trinidad Chamber and the Trinidad and Tobago Trade Facilitation Office in Cuba did an outstanding job of putting this mission together", commented one delegate of the South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce's (STCIC) recently concluded Energy Services Trade Mission to Cuba.
The STCIC organised an Energy Services Trade Mission to Cuba, from November 24th to 28th, 2008. We worked closely with the Trinidad and Tobago, Government-funded TIDCO Trade Facilitation Office based in Havana, Cuba to plan an appropriate business agenda for the visiting companies.
The Trade Facilitation Office in Cuba worked tirelessly to secure appropriate meetings for our delegation. The Office was very successful in setting up productive meetings for the entire delegation and also ensuring that all arrangements were put in place to guarantee that the Trade Mission was as fruitful as it set out to be. Meetings were set up with key companies, such as Sherritt, Canada- Fitzroy Richardson, CEO; Repsol YPF, Spain- Jose Conesa, General Manager; PVEP Cuba Company Ltd, Vietnam- Dinh Trong Huy, General Manager; PDVSA-Cuba, Venezuela- Carlos Cardona and Jose Borrel; CUBAPETROLEO (Cupet); ENERGAS (joint venture between Sherritt Canada and Cupet).
Overall the delegation was given the opportunity to meet with key personnel in the oil and gas sectors of Cuba and to visit the major oil fields and other facilities. They were given first hand knowledge about the industry and were presented with several business opportunities. The delegates were able to make significant contacts while in Cuba that should certainly lead to further business opportunities in the future.
The STCIC remains committed to exploring markets to export energy services and making direct business contacts to the benefit of all our Members. The STCIC firmly believes that there is potential for growth in Cuba's oil and gas industry and our member companies are fully capable to take advantage of these opportunities due to their wealth of experience and skills in these areas.
The STCIC is currently in the process of planning another Energy Services Trade Mission to Africa, carded for June 2009.
