Ambassador Jeffert Davidow, the White House Adviser for the Fifth Summit of the Americas being held in Port of Spain next month, says he is convinced that United States President Barack Obama "is going to Trinidad with the intention of treating all the presidents there with the respect that they merit as elected heads of state".
"And it is my hope that all the other presidents there will treat each other with that same kind of respect and use the kind of language one would expect in polite company," Davidow said.
He called the upcoming summit in Port of Spain "a crucial moment in the history of summitry", as he thanked this country's Government for its preparations for the event.
Davidow did so as tensions between the United States and Venezuela, a major oil exporter to the American markets, rose under the tenure of Obama's immediate predecessor in office, George W Bush.
It was only on Friday that the website of the White House, where the Office of the United States President is located, announced in a press release that Obama had appointed Davidow as the White House Adviser for the Summit of the Americas.
"As President Obama said on February 10, he will attend the Summit of the Americas to be held in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19. The President is looking forward to discussions with the leaders at the summit and to promoting a partnership based on mutual respect that will be beneficial to the people of the Americas," the White House press release stated.
It also stated that Davidow "will oversee preparations for the President's participation in the Summit and, in conjunction with the Department of State, will help manage summit-related diplomacy in the region".
Davidow made his comments with respect to his expectations for the Summit during a discussion on the event, held at The Inter-American Dialogue, which is a centre for policy analysis, exchange and communication on issues in Western Hemisphere, in Washington DC last Thursday.
