ONE day after the explosion and fire at the No 4 ammonia manufacturing plant at PCS Nitrogen compound on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate, company officials said no work will resume at the plant until investigations reveal what caused the blast.
On Thursday night, shortly after 7 pm, there was an explosion and a fire at the plant.
The company's managing director Ian Welch said on Thursday no one was injured by the accident but there were about five to seven operators on shift work at the time.
A statement from the company yesterday said all emergency management systems operated efficiently to preserve the safety of PCS's employees and neighbouring communities and the PCS site. Welch assured that the shutdown of the No 4 plant was not going to affect the company's supplies of potash, phosphate and industrial chemicals.
Production from the No 4 plant he said was 2,000 tonnes.
The company said yesterday investigations were continuing to determine the cause of the occurrence and that all regulatory bodies were informed.
“We are working closely with them to fulfill their requirements,” PCS said in a statement.
A team from the Chaguanas Fire Station was sent to the plant to conduct investigations. She said while the plant will not resume operations, workers, including maintenance crews and operators, will report for duty.
